After all, it was conceived to be that way: LTE to LTE-Advanced to 5G to 5G-Advanced, all with the same waveform. And then to 6G?
Every year in the fall, over 80 top tier analysts are invited to Cowboy Nation (Texas) to gather with the 15 members (down from 17 last year) of the 5G Americas organization for the annual update on the state of the 5G union in the Americas. Like last year, Stelyana attended the event in Richardson, TX, on October 23-24, which was led by dozens of subject matter experts representing wireless companies, including communications service providers (CSPs), equipment manufacturers, tower and infrastructure companies, and networking software providers.
As usual, the U.S. representatives dominated the discussions and the debates and the impact of the AT&T/Ericsson $14B open vRAN deal announced in December last year was top of mind. Consequently, after the usual 5G regional updates, many of the roundtable discussions focused on open RAN, AI RAN, RAN architecture, new radio technology, and RAN automation.
