Freshly back from Taipei where I participated in the government led Industrial Technology Research Institute’s (ITRI) 5G Summit, I confirm my statement. Figure 1 provides a comprehensive illustration: 40 Taiwanese companies encompassing the nation’s vast and complete supply chain (e.g., semiconductor, IC design, manufacturing, and packaging) are actively involved in open RAN developments targeted at vertical uses cases, which has been the major focus so far driven by the government. As a result, Taiwan boasts a comprehensive private 5G network ecosystem from open RAN to core to integration.

This was initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs’ (MOEA) four-track strategy (i.e., 5G chips, small cells, open RAN, and private 5G networks) supported by the National Communications Commission's release of the n79 band. In 2022, the Industrial Development Administration (IDA) funded 10 domestic vendors to deploy 13 open RAN in verticals including smart factories, hospitals, and ports in Kaohsiung; further R&D subsidies were provided in 2023.
